When you've been in a relationship for a while you come to realise that it isn't the (sporadic) big romantic gestures that are keeping you together for the long haul, but the little ways you show your love to each other every day. This past weekend I spent an insane amount of time attacking the thick-rooted weeds in our garden and as soon as I finished I jumped in the shower to wash off all the dirt. When I emerged from the bathroom — freshly washed and cocooned in comfy clothes — I found my other half preparing me some tea and toast because he had noticed that in my fervor I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. The fact that he noticed and cared gave me the warm-and-fuzzies and reminded me why he's a keeper.
This theory of taking a few minutes out of your day to do something nice for another person works to strengthen all of your relationships — from your parents to your colleagues — and leaves you with such an intense feeling of satisfaction with yourself that you may just become addicted to doing nice things (which really isn't the worst addiction to have!).
If you're suddenly in the giving spirit, why not join me and try your hand at doing five special somethings for the ones you love over the next five days. Here’s how I chose to show my special people just how special they were:
1 - Surprised a stranger with a caffeine hit
I saw this in a movie once and was dying to try it! So next time you're ordering your double-shot-chai-latte, ask the barista to let you pay for the person behind you as well, because you've never known gratitude until you satiate a stranger's caffeine cravings.
2 - Gave my partner the morning off
Whether it means walking the dog, getting kids ready for school or even just whipping up a super fancy sanga they can take in for lunch, they will definitely appreciate the extra pillow time.
3 - Took my sister out to lunch
Having siblings is like being born into a life-long friendship that nobody else understands.
Celebrate that special relationship by taking your siblings out to lunch — even if it’s just soup flasks in the park they'll appreciate the extra family time and opportunity to remind each other how weird your parents are.
4 - Surprised my mum with a bouquet of flowers
Mums are the best and we really shouldn't be waiting until Mother's Day to say thanks for everything they've done. Give your mum some flowers and just watch yourself move into top spot as the favourite child.
5- Bought my colleague a little gift for no reason
Found a mug that totally relates to an inside joke you share? Buy that for them. Gifts don't need to be flashy or expensive to make someone happy.
And after all that giving, you should probably treat yo’self as well because your stomach knows you deserve it.
