Hey short stuff: 3 essential closet items for short women
I have always considered myself to be quite short (I am descended from jockeys, after all!) but after discovering our petite model Sandy (who is only 4'10'') over at my other site Sizeable, I realised that while I might be on the shorter end of the height spectrum I am not outrageously small. Even though I might tower over Sandy, I've still had to figure out a few tips for making myself appear taller without having to wear stacked heels every day (because heels make me tired and I'm much more of a Converse girl anyway!) and I'm here to share those tips with you. If you've got a tailor on speed dial to take up every pair of pants you've ever bought, then you should make sure your wardrobe is packed with the following items so you don't disappear entirely in your outfit.
Cropped jeans are your new best friend
If the most painful part of the jean-buying process for you is the fact that you have to roll all your pants up 63 times before you can see your feet, then you need to find yourself a go-to brand who make cropped jeans. These pants are usually created as "ankle grazers" but depending on your height could work out to be your perfect length! I personally love Ziggy Sticks and Bones skinny jeans because their cropped length is the perfect size for my legs! If you're super short then you might even be able to get away with pedal-pushers as skinny jeans as well!
High-waisted styles will give you legs for days
We all know that tucking your top into a high-waisted skirt will help give you more of an hourglass figure, but if you're short it will also help to make you appear taller. Find high-waisted pants, shorts or skirts and tuck your top in to make your legs look extra long. This trick works even better if you wear a block colour on the bottom (especially darker shades) and a contrasting colour or print up top.
Vertical stripes will elongate your whole look
It is generally advised that petite women stick to a monochrome colour palette and avoid large or busy patterns (which I personally think is a fairly boring way to live your life!), but if there's one pattern that will make you look taller without swamping your frame then it is vertical stripes. If you're wearing something with vertical stripes it creates an optical illusion and helps draw the eye up, which in turn makes you appear taller and longer. Vertical stripes look great as pants (Beetlejuice style!), shirts or jackets, but we're especially loving vertical stripe shift dresses for a super easy Summer look.
