Imagination games: 7 awesome cardboard toys that kids will love

For some reason kids' imaginations are so awesome that they can see a much bigger world of possibilities in the cardboard box that their toys come in than on the actual (usually quite expensive) toys that were inside the box. One year my uncle didn't get my sister a birthday present and gave her a roll of toilet paper when she asked. It was easily her favourite present of the day and also the cheapest — considering it came from our house. Turning your old fridge box into a rocketship or spending hours working together to turn a box into a car can be a fun project (and let's be honest it will keep the little ones entertained for a while!) that they'll love.

If you're not artistically inclined, then you can actually buy cardboard toys that come flat packed with instructions on how you can assemble them to create the toy. Some come in white so you and the kids can colour them in before you assemble it, while others just look better in plain craft, but whichever way the kids choose to play with them you know that you won't be collecting the same plastic toys that will end up in the landfill in a couple of years since cardboard toys are completely recyclable.
