Keeping tabs: 5 of our favourite tech tablets right now
Does anybody else find it strange to think that even twenty years ago most of the technology that we consider to be commonplace today was complete science fiction? The concept of people using handheld computer devices (like on Star Trek) or having access to almost unlimited information (Like The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy) was so unrealistic that people probably laughed at the idea. This was a time when the most portable mobile phone was the size — and weight — of a brick, so the fact that my phone is so light and compact that it is constantly slipping through my fingers seems like a ridiculous complaint. Everybody clearly thought the way of the future was just that our phones would get smaller and smaller — Like Derek Zoolander's flip phone or my old favourite Nokia the 8210 — and while that wasn't necessarily the case (I mean, the latest iPhones are even bigger to compete with Samsung's growing popularity) computers have gotten so portable that the line between phone and computer is a hazy blur.
Tech tablets — the keyboard-free little brother to your old laptop — have risen so much in popularity in recent years that it is not out of the ordinary to see people on the street using it in place of their phone camera. I still consider these people to be weirdos (and find it fairly annoying if you're at a show because they're ten times the size and block the views of everybody behind them! Small person rant over!), but find it incredibly amazing that this is an option that's even possible. If you haven't had a play with one yet, I thoroughly recommend you give them a try — tablets are a lighter and way more portable way to get all your computing work done on the run (and without the hot weight of a laptop on your lap!).
