That’s such a tricky one, tattoos are so personal.
I actually have 3 (all small…and 2 are well hidden). And the two that I actually designed myself are the two I still really love, even years later. The one that I just picked from the tattoo artists book I would probably get removed if it wasn’t so painful/expensive, because it really has no meaning (other than I was kind of silly when I was 18).
Would you consider designing one yourself, or asking an artsy friend to do one for you? x
I totally agree with Kate – make sure you get something you really want rather than getting a tattoo for getting a tattoo’s sake. Think of what style you like (Pretty, bold, manga, black and white) and then something that means something to you, or something that you really like, and then get someone to draw something for you. I had a friend who is obsessed with deers (and likes pretty, girly tattoos) who got a Japanese man to draw a tattoo up for her with the description “A pretty little deer with pretty things”. She ended up with the most gorgeous deer with necklaces and jewels hanging from it’s antlers, and blooms all the way up it’s legs. She loves it so much because it was her tattoo and something that nobody else has.
I myself wouldn’t get a tattoo but I have to say that the 3D tattoos are pretty creative and some are really artistic. Here’s a pic of a 3D tattoo.

I’ve been thinking about putting lace tattoo in one of the character I’m working on. I cant have any tattoo but I can do henna. I think its pretty feminine than a common tribal tattoo.

This is such a complicated question, because apart from all the different styles mentioned above (and all the other styles not mentioned), there are so many other factors to take into account when getting a tattoo (although I have to admit that I don’t take any of my tattoos too seriously).
One thing I think is very important is your pain threshold and whether this is your first tattoo. I have seen lots of people have big plans for amazing tattoos get foiled by the fact that they can’t bear the pain involved in getting it finished. So you need to take into account that some places are more painful to get tattooed than others (such as your feet or ribs). Size is also a factor in pain/time/money so maybe start out with something small until you decide on an image that you can live with covering a significant portion of your skin for [generally] the rest of your life.
When it comes to the design of your tattoo, you should look to other tattoos for inspiration rather than something to copy. You want it to be a reflection of your personality not somebody else’s. People seem to be happiest with their tattoos if they think first about their favourite things in life, such as movies, books, animals (etc) and designing their tattoo around that theme.
I have 5 tattoos, all of them are small and just with black ink (so people normally think i only have one or two until i point them all out) and while people may think my reasons behind them are stupid and immature I know that they represent different periods in my life and i wouldn’t change any of them. My favourite tattoo is just below the crook in my arm and says “forty-two” in my sister’s beautiful handwriting. People rarely get that this tattoo is basically a joke from my favourite book (the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy) and my version of ‘tattoo satire’ (After my Mum joked about me not having any meaning behind my tattoos).
Sorry this has gone on so long, but as I said before don’t even worry about what other people think of your tattoos: it is your body and you can do what you like.

I totally agree with getting something designed personally, that way it is unique to you and hopefully you will keep liking it! If you really can’t decide, try a few out in henna first to see what sort of thing you like.
I don’t have tattoos myself – I’m too scared I would hate it after awhile!
But I do believe that the whole idea of come up with the idea of what you want as a tattoo & if you still like it in a years time get it done!
That was the advice, now the ideas, the coolest tattoo I’ve seen recently was a girl had written across her foot ‘what will be will be’ in cursive script! I thought it was really cool!
I have a cut little ladybug behind my ear, “karma” on my wrist and a cut little owl on my hip, all 3 have some relevance(?) to me.
I think that wolves look really good on tattoos just because theres so much to them as a creature.
I think this is a good tattoo, something along the lines of what I would get if I got a tattoo (though maybe not so big and different spot?- but thats just me personally)
